Cadiz, Costa de la Luz, Andalucia, Spain

Cádiz is the oldest city in western Europe with records suggesting that the city was occupied more than 3,000 years ago. Standing on a peninsula jutting out into a bay and is almost entirely surrounded by sea. This has therefore always been important as a seafaring town with strong ties with the African continent from where adventurers and merchants came and opened the New World of the Americas

The original Iberian settlers lived here an future civilizations of Greeks and Phoenicians were here.

Some of the city's 18th century walls still stand, such as the Landward Gate. The old, central quarter of Cádiz is famous for its picturesque charm, and many of the buildings reflect the city's overseas links.

There are plenty of absorbing monuments and museums, a near limitless supply of great bars and restaurants and a lively nightlife. Worth a visit are the city's Cathedral, the golden dome glinting in the sun, flanked by high turreted towers and churches of Santa Cruz and San Felipe Neri. Other points of interest are La Santa Cueva, home to several paintings by Goya, and stately mansions such as the Casa del Almirante and Casa de las Cadenas. The best way to take it all in is to stroll around this magnificent city. Start at the northeast corner of Plaza de España and circumambulate the city, taking in the seascapes and gardens.

The Carnival is famous and it is one of Spain's happiest fiestas, you will need to book a hotel months in advance as they get booked up early. This 10 day fiesta is full of fun, dancing, singing and drinking fancy dress party.

There is more to Cádiz than the city. The province of Cádiz covers over 7,000 square kilometres and has a coastline of 250km.
