Jerez de la Frontera, in the heart of the province of Cádiz and is famous for its sherry and brandy production. Jerez is also well known for its fine horses as well as Flamenco music and dance. Jerez is actually "Sherry" mispronounced, centuries ago by British wine importers.
Visitors can take guided tours of the many Jerez bodegas, such as Gonzalez Byass (Tio Pepe), Sandeman and Pedro Domecq. Sherry is quite obviously the most identifiable wine from the region. Made from Palomino grapes (along with Pedro Ximenez), sherry comes in a variety of styles.
The town dates back to Moorish times and has a rather aristocratic air to it, with pretty palm lined avenues and squares, a charming old town, a Cathedral of Salvador and the remains of an 11th century Moorish fortress (Alcazaba)
In February there is the Flamenco festival of Jerez and it is one of the most important in the world, with two weeks of phenomenal music and dance from internationally renowned performers.
Jerez de la Frontera is an ideal tourist destination and it is very accessible by car, by plane (Jerez has its own Airport) or by the AVE high speed train.
